Three Americans, One German Are First To Quality For The Finals Of The Global Female Drumming Contest
Hit Like A Girl, the global online contest for female drummers announced the first of its 2016 weekly winners, three from the US, and one from Germany.
Under 18 Percussion Phenoms
Fourteen year-old Gina Eterovich (United States) became the first person ever to make the finals playing a pad rather than a drum or drum set. She’s been playing drum set for ten years, but says she thought it would be cool to bring something different to the drum set. She was right.
The next winner, Devikah (United States), is a 17-year old School Of Rock alumnus who found her passion when she was 13 years old. Her entry covers “Desert Tornado” by the Aristocrats. Devikah is currently in the Music Business and Technology Program at the College of Southern Nevada and her goal is to be a session drummer.
18+ Kick Stars
Kiana Gibson (United States) played a rollicking beat over a Machine Gun Kelly track. The self-taught drummer began playing as a freshman in high schools and says “Waking up everyday competing with your past self is a great motivation in my book,[and] this also helps you to focus on yourself rather than stressing out about the competition that is out there.”
Theresa Stark (Germany) was another 18+ winner for her sensational entry that featured her playing in a trio setting with piano and bass. Therese honed her technique through studies at the Berufsfachschule in Dinkelsbuehl as well as the Pop Academy in Mannheim, Germany, where she was a student of well-known teachers such as Florian Alexandru-Zorn, author of a globally popular book on playing with brushes.
How The Judging Works
Each week until March 9 guest judges will pick two Under 18 and two 18+ winners to move on to the final round of judging. Additional wild cards may be chosen by sponsors and judges. Then from March 14-23 fans will have the chance to vote for their favorites. In the end a minimum of 20 finalists will be chosen in both age groups. The celebrity judges, which include Prince’s 3rdEyeGirl drummer Hannah Welton, jazz ace Kim Thompson, UK great Emily Dolan-Davies, Emmanuelle Caplette, the Summer Set’s Jess Bowen, Cuban star Yissy Garcia, Grammy-winner Terri Lyne Carrington, YouTube star Anika Nilles, Venzella Joy (also Beyonce), Kate Nash’s Alicia Warrington, Cherisse Osei of the Bryan Ferry band, and guest male judges Steve Smith of Journey fame and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, will announce winners on April 14, 2016 in a live webcast event.
Plenty Of Time To Enter
Entries in the contest are accepted up until March 13th. All you have to do is upload a video and bio and you’re in. Younger girls are required to submit parental consent forms (available at the site)
