Denise Yeow is best known as the drummer of Singaporean speed/thrash metal band, Dezaster.
She started drumming at the age of 11 from a music school. In secondary school, she joined the symphonic band as a percussionist. Being in the symphonic band exposed her to a wide range of genres – namely jazz, funk, and pop. Her main instruments included the drum set, concert snare, and auxiliary percussion.
Not long after, she discovered Guns N’ Roses’ debut record Appetite for Destruction and found her love for heavy metal and rock music. She went on to play in several bands covering songs from GNR, AC/DC, Metallica, Motley Crue, Deep Purple, and the like. In 2017, Denise entered the Hit Like A Girl competition and emerged as a finalist, covering Iron Maiden’s “2 Minutes to Midnight”. She also participated in the 2018 edition of HLAG where she was chosen to be one of the winners of Techra Drumsticks’ Top Ten Special Award.
In April 2018, Denise was recruited into Dezaster. The band released their debut album No Surrender (2019) –also her first professional recording at age 21. In the same year, the band went on their first overseas show in Manila, Philippines in October. Dezaster has also opened for notable metal bands such as Nervosa, Coffins and Artillery in 2020. The band is currently working on their second full-length album.
Apart from her drumming duties in Dezaster, Denise is also an instructor in a music school. She hopes to impart the love of drumming to her students. She believes in constant learning and keeping an open mind to take in new concepts regardless of skill level.
