Hello! I’m Rachel, a kiwi drummer/multi-instrumentalist living and working in Melbourne Australia.
My older brother started drumming when I was four years old, and throughout my childhood, I thought drums were the absolute. I would air drum along to my favourite songs, never really expecting to actually learn them (I wanted to be a Spice Girl, truth be told). It wasn’t until a school trip to the local high school for a music lesson when we all got to play the drum kit, and I was the only one in the class who could hold a beat. So the seed was planted. The next year I started high school and heard I could get out of class for itinerant music lessons. Getting out of maths to learn the drums? Sign me up! Once I started learning, I was hooked. I air drummed to practice until I saved enough of my hard earned cash to buy my own kit. I found solace in drumming, an escape from a crazy teenage world, stuck in a small town.
Throughout high school I played in several bands, deciding pretty early on I wanted to study music at university. I learned how to play guitar and started writing my own songs, performing at local Battle of the Bands competitions. I graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Music (Hons, 1st Class) in 2011, having studied with some amazing lecturers. Throughout my time at uni I played drums for several bands, musicals, and even ended up providing vocals and occasionally drums for a corporate show band, with whom I toured around New Zealand.
In 2012 I made the leap with my originals Garage Rock band Honeybone, and moved to Melbourne, Australia. I worked a corporate job during the day, and played Honeybone gigs at night. Three years in and I was done, my anxiety levels had peaked and the desk job had to go. I threw out the corporate blazer and focused on my music full time. Two weeks after, I had an audition for Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant, and secured the gig. I’m now into my second 12 month contract at Dracula’s, being a vampire and providing drums, vocals, bass, ukulele, acting and even some dancing (it’s VERY basic) four to five nights a week. I love drumming and where it has taken me. I feel that I am now living my true self, and there is nothing more fulfilling than that.
Thanks for watching!
