Drummer Lala, 2017 Hit Like a Girl: “Birthday” by The Beatles
My interest in drumming began when my math tutor, Diane Hirakawa, played a song for me on her drums. She allowed me to try and I loved it! Ever since then I study math and drums with Diane a.k.a. Drummer Di (entered in the over 18+ category). My strongest influences are Diane and Rich Redmond since they both play wonderfully and have a strong passion for the art of drumming. I am working on Rich’s “FUNdamentals of Drumming for Kids” and like how he makes it easy to learn.
I started drumming when I was 8 ½ yrs old and will reach 20 hours of drum lessons by the time I am 9 ½ yrs old. I practice whenever I find the time and even use my hands to drum on the cafeteria table during my lunch break at school. I often play on the store shelves and try to entertain my parents and customers while they are shopping. I currently only have a basic drum set and hope to upgrade in the near future. I learn quick with every step. I just need a little bit of practice and after I know how it goes, I can do it anytime. So far I learned 4/4 and 6/8 time plus classic and southern rock. Next I will learn other music genres.
Reading music, learning rudiments, fills, and grooves has been tricky but a great experience. I still have a lot to learn but am constantly encouraged by my parents and inspired by Diane, Simon Das Gupta, and girl drummers around the world. Right now my goal is to play the songs I learn without errors. Honestly, I just want to play and let everyone enjoy the power of music.
I am a girl and I drum so yes, I Hit Like a Girl! I hope you all enjoy my playing and see that we are never too young or old to be passionate about something. Good luck to everyone.
