Name: Kseniya Kurochkina
Location: Nizhniy Nivgorod, Russian Federation
My name is Kseniya, I’m from Russia, Nizhniy Novgorod city.
I started drumming at about the age of 16, before I had studied the piano in a local school of music and had also learned to play the guitar by myself, some basics. But the drums were that very instrument that touched my heart once and, apparently, forever. It just happened so that my friends played in a rock band – I tried to play for the first time at their rehearsal. I liked it, and then, for a year, having no drumset, I just tapped with my fingers on the tables at school 🙂 This experience helped me to start playing in a local rock band and make first steps into music.
At university, in 2009, (I studied ay the Lingustic Uni) I met the guys who were willing to play too and we made up a band called Nextime. For 5 years we were developing together, overcoming difficulties, enjoying music. None of us really cared about musical education, hard practice – we just ejoyed playing, creating songs (which even now seem to me quite sophisticated and I wonder how I was able to play them at that level of technique:). Parallelly I took drum lessons from a teacher, who motivated me to work more. At that moment of my life I also got crazy with Dave Grohl, as he was the first person to inspire me so much, by his integrity and enthusiasm.
Time passed, my band finished its existence (though a part of the band including me is still playing together in other projects). But now I play much more – I practice, play covers in several bands (pop, rock, rockabilly-psychobilly) and as a session drummer. Often I just jam or record something with my boyfriend who is a bass player. We share music and develop hand by hand.
At the moment close to all my thoughts, ideas and actions are connected with drumming; the nearest plan is to take up percussion, as a month ago I met a great percussionist to learn from, he inspired me immensely!
As for my tastes in music – they transformed a lot during my life; now, looking into my playlist, I see there such names as Robert Glasper, Dave Weckl, Badbadnotgood, RHCP, Snarky Puppy, Mark Guiliana, Foo Fighters, Hiatus Kaiyote (just the first names I ran into).
I’m really glad to have an opportunity to take part in Hit Like A Girl, thank you for this contest, it’s a good challenge and a good way of communication between the contestants, the judjes and the viewers!
