Vanessa Smith

I'm 57 years old and started playing drums in the school music program when I was 10. The drum teacher wanted me to play clarinet but I insisted on playing the drums. I was the only female drummer through most of Junior High and High School. I continued playing when I went away to college, subbing as an extra snare drum player in marching band, or in the percussion pit when needed. My favorite bands were Styx, Boston and Journey and I loved Neil Peart and Steve Smith.

Then adult life happened, and like many I stopped playing except to pick up my sticks every once in awhile. I would play occasionally at church or work functions.

I joined the Drumeo online lesson community last July and it has rekindled my love of the drumset. I love collaborating with other women all across the globe and its so much fun to see us encouraging each other on our learning journey. I choose the Electro-Pop play along from the Drumeo site, because it is such a positive and uplifting track and perfect for the electronic kit.

Well played. And using traditional grip. After I quit playing for 18 years when I started back up I went to matched grip. I probably need to take the time and get back to at least being comfortable with traditional grip.

Thank you! I tried playing matched grip and it just wasn’t comfortable like traditional is for me. I guess because that’s how I learned to play initially.

I get the Digital Drummer Newsletter and you’re featured in one of the articles so I checked this out. Nicely done, very good. Seems like you’re playing is pretty good. Just curious, are you back to playing at or above the level you were at when you stopped playing? You must’ve felt rusty when you restarted. Sometimes I feel rusty when I stop playing for a week.

    • vanessalsmith on April 4, 2020 at 3:21 am

Thanks Jimmy! I am still rusty, but getting back there. My weak spots are of course the slowest to return – timing and bass drum foot for me. But I am determined to keep focusing on those things, and playing regularly again to keep them.

Hi Vanessa! I’m a Drumeo member, too, and I remember doing that song in a collaboration video. Fun choice, and your playing was confident and solid. Congrats on the weekly win, too! Cheers!

Vanessa, I also really like Neil Peart, Steve Smith and among others drummers. It’s great to know that you’ve joined the Drumeo online class community after a long time. It is very important that you also take in person classes at least twice a month with the same teacher. Good luck!
