Tyan Lee

I'm Tyan, a 16-year-old drummer from Singapore who's been playing for 4 years and hopefully many more to come. I first became interested in drumming through my dad's love of classic rock, and ACDC's Phil Rudd inspired me to start. Now, my heroes in the field are Brandon Khoo (my first teacher and the first person I'd seen with a mohawk), Luke Holland, Jessica Burdeaux, Dave Grohl and Neil Peart.

My all-time favorite memory is playing in my school's concert - I went to boarding school abroad at the age of 11, and somehow wide-eyed, painfully shy me joined a band and played 'Come Together'. I remember the silence of the auditorium as I shakily clicked my sticks together and started the song, stage lights in my eyes and adrenaline in my veins. Afterward, everyone in my boarding house, from my friends to people I barely knew, lifted me on their shoulders all the way back, our 12-year-old squeals and hollers ringing through the night.

Since then, drumming has pulled me through many dark places. I struggled with severe anxiety and suicidal ideation in boarding school. Whenever I felt absolutely lost and alone, my family thousands of miles away, I would trudge through the frigid English weather for 25 minutes to a small drum kit hidden in the music department, put on my headphones and start playing. For a long time, drumming was the only respite I had. It still never fails to make me smile, even on my worst days, and you can bet I'm not going to stop anytime soon.
