A native of Iowa, Tasha Becker is a percussionist in her fourth year at Iowa State University where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree. She currently studies with Dr. Jonathan Sharp. During her time at Iowa State, Tasha has performed with the university's symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, symphonic band, percussion ensemble, and marching band. She has also been a guest percussionist for the State Singers, Iowa State University Honor Choir, and the Central Iowa Symphony where she most recently played the cymbals on Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture.
From very early on, Tasha showed a passion and talent for music. Her family tells stories of her singing before she could talk, and later walking around the house singing on repeat the only part of "Mr. Sun" she knew: half of the first verse. She started piano lessons at age 6, which she continued with through her freshman year of college. Tasha began her percussion studies in late middle school under the instruction of Christopher Foster. During high school, she began more seriously developing her percussion abilities.
Tasha received numerous awards throughout high school for her percussion performance. She was named outstanding soloist in the solo competition all four years. Her junior and senior years of high school, she was accepted to the Iowa All-State Band through very competitive auditions. She was named runner-up for the Roy Schwab scholarship her senior year, which required an interview, theory exam, and live performance.
In her college career, Tasha competed in the Percussive Arts Society International Convention's chamber ensemble competition in 2016 and 2018 where her chamber group placed 7th and 4th, respectively. Most recently, she was the winner of the Iowa Days of Percussion collegiate marimba solo competition.
In the upcoming year, after attending the NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar and the Leigh Howard Stevens Summer Marimba Seminar, Tasha will be traveling around the state of Iowa giving clinics to high school percussionists about solo and ensemble rehearsal and performance techniques.
When she is not practicing or studying, Tasha enjoys watching The Office, going to the gym, playing Mario Kart Wii with friends, and spending time with her new nephew.
