tānāshāh is a musical project by Tanya Sharma, an Indian musician currently based in Canada. Growing up in the multicultural city of New Delhi, Tanya explored vocal performance in theatre, French choir, and Sufi music.
However, it was upon travelling around the world that Tanya found herself so moved by the underground music scenes of Amsterdam, Berlin, and Toronto that she decided to produce her own music. tānāshāh is born out of a vision to explore sounds that seamlessly blend ambient, melodic, dark, downtempo electronic music with interesting vocal tapestries and thoughtful lyrics. tānāshāh, which means “dictator” in Tanya’s mother tongue, Hindi, is a submission to the borderline-tyrannical command to create. The name, which is also visually and sonically symmetric, is also an ode to how the joy of creation brings balance.
