Stacy Norris

My name is Stacy Groove Girl Norris. I am a 17-year old Chicago-based drummer. I started playing the drums at a young age and I sharpened my drum skills playing every summer at the Fernando Jones Blues Camp in Chicago. I am a junior in high school and love being part of the marching band, the jazz band, and percussion in the wind ensemble. Even though I play many different genres, my first love is the blues and I play in several blues-inspired bands in my spare time and in the summer. This experience has allowed me to play several major blues festivals in the Midwest and beyond. One of my proudest moments was to represent Chicago in the youth category at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis this year with my current band MudCity Blu. My influences include Buddy Rich, Clyde Stubblefield, and Tony Royster Jr. My video is a jazz tribute to Buddy Rich. I admire his technique, creativity, power, and speed. I enjoy participating in Hit Like a Girl because it gives me a challenging goal that I work on. I always come out a better drummer in the end because of the hard work I put into it.

Congratulations Groove Girl on your accomplishments. I had pleasure and honor of seeing you play with Mud City Blu at Buddy Guys. You are a extremely much greater drummer than the one I worked with when I was in my first band as a teenager. I am the cousin of your guitarist, Mr. Carter. I look forward to creating some music with you all this year. A bit of Trivia…Michelle Jackson, who was about 17 at the time, was a drummer on my EP Cassette Rulers of the World, doing drums on “It’s On You”.

I, too, am a avid blues/jazz fan. I say this because I have witnessed Stacy Norris perform numerous times. As a piano player, one that notice musical technique, Stacy embodies that spirit with her drums and I think that her musical ability, she will be a force to reckon with in the future. —LDW
