Sheryl Zeplinski

I began drumming at 50. I was always drawn to the drummer when watching a rock band perform, as that was where all the energy and excitement seemed to radiate. And even though the drummer is typically a guy, it still was a role I wanted to embody. I grew up loving Led Zeppelin and the powerful drumming of John Bonham. I was inspired by rock in general, loving such bands as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers and more, with my latest love - Greta Van Fleet. The decision to start learning a new instrument (I'd just played a little keyboard as a kid) was entered into with the respect for learning I have from being an educator. I'm all too aware of the emotional process it is to learn something for the first time, and yet starting this endeavor still humbled me beyond belief. The highlight of my drumming to date was performing a 6 song set at The Bitter End in NY with a unique and noteworthy organization, Music Makers NY, that joins together, supports and inspires musicians of all ages and skill levels. From first practicing on pots and pans at home, to my electronic drum kits and beyond, my journey continues. As I learn more, the realization of the infinite reservoir of skills, styles, techniques, theories etc. that is inherent to learning any instrument can be overwhelming and even discouraging. I had to come to a realization that that is ok, and what it really is about is each and every nugget of knowledge gleaned and step taken in that journey.

Good for you to take up drumming at 50! I was in mid 50’s when I started. I so relate to everything you have to say about learning. it was so beautiful and well thought out, especially the humbling thing. I had to swallow so much pride to play in public in the beginning because i was not very good and I took me a long time to “get it”. I am sure I persisted when many would have given up. Keep it up because you are doing a good job. PS I live in upstate NY.

And thank you Paul Kang, for inspiring ME to have hope for my back and treating and educating me about it. A scoliosis specialist is a rare gem and you’re the best in the business. – And add to that a killer wit that helps to lighten any one’s load in life.
