I've been playing music since I was very young, but I really got into drumming in the last 4 years, and now I gig and teach drums.
The track I have uploaded is my own composition, based on an 11/8 groove, played along to a drum machine programmed in this time signature. One of my favourite ways of playing (and performing) is to play along with a drum machine, and control the machine (mixing up when the different layers come in and out for a drop or build-ups), as well as how I play the kit. It's a fun way of combining looping technology with live playing, and does wonders for your timing.
I have many, many influences from different genres as well as from other instruments I play, and being mostly self-taught, I am not 'specialist' in any style. I have played in and led samba bands, which is a big influence. Electronic and dance music is also another favourite influence of mine; Afro-Cuban, Afrobeat, neo-soul, and more recently, jazz. Basically, anything that sounds unusual, challenging, but makes people want to move their bodies, is what I'm drawn to!
Drummers and musicians that inspire me aren’t necessarily famous hotshot names, but usually performers I see at gigs. However, one big name I love at the moment is Nate Smith and his latest album, ‘Pocket Change’. Just drums. Pure drums.
Good luck to everyone who enters! This is my first time, and it seems like a supportive environment on here.
