Sara Brennan

Hi there! My name is Sara and I am 14 years old. My intro to drumming started in the fourth grade as a snare drummer for my elementary school. I played the snare drum for just a few months before deciding that I wanted my own drum set!

Over the past four years I have had the opportunity to play as the set drummer for a show made up of our local elementary school music teachers, as well as playing in school variety shows, talent shows, concerts, and the CJMEA Honors band – twice! I am the set drummer for my middle school’s jazz band and I double as the set drummer for the high school jazz band as well. I also play with our school’s 7/8th grade band, advanced band, wind ensemble, and marching band! I am our marching band’s section leader. Our middle school just started an indoor percussion group this year, and I am the snare drum section leader for that as well. Every year I look forward to attending our town’s band camp, where I get to play along with our high school’s marching band. I especially look forward to our football season because I am part of the pep band, which is a group of students that have the unique opportunity to play along side the high school marching band at our home football games. I will be graduating from 8th grade this year and I am looking forward to joining our high school marching band this summer!

Some of the drummers that I am awed and inspired by include my drum teacher Colin Bell, John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Carter Beauford, and Neil Peart. I have a love for all music, and some of my favorites are classic rock, reggae, pop, and jazz. I love learning about new drummers in my lessons as I learn about different styles of music!

As much as I am involved with music both in and out of school, I also play for my school’s softball, basketball, and volleyball team. I love riding my bike, hanging with my friends, skiing, snow tubing, swimming, camping, and hiking too.

This is my second year entering this contest. I have always enjoyed Broadway Musicals and wanted to get an idea of what it would be like to be a drummer for a live musical. I wanted to expand my skills into reading charts from famous Broadway Musicals that I love. I’ve recently been concentrating on reading charts, learning drum set notation, and trying to get those page turns down while playing!

For this year’s submission, I have a mash-up for you from Rent (Another Day) and In the Heights (In the Heights). These are two of my favorite musicals, with some pretty groovy beats and a variety of styles. I hope to do them justice just like a pro, and I hope you enjoy what you see!

Very nicely played. Your playing is solid with authority. And you were reading a chart which is great. Too many young drummers can’t read music.

Thanks for the compliments! I get such a variety of music to play from all of my middle school bands and high school jazz band that being able to read makes it so much easier to figure things out!

If you keep playing like this Mom and Dad will get to retire early😁😁🎶🎶. Just remember two things 1 2 3 and 4 on the Bell of the cymbal and all the ends on the Ride part of the symbol and the second thing just play all the ends on the Bell of the cymbal. I don’t mean that for that song just for practicing purposes.
