Hi there! My name is Sara and I am 14 years old. My intro to drumming started in the fourth grade as a snare drummer for my elementary school. I played the snare drum for just a few months before deciding that I wanted my own drum set!
Over the past four years I have had the opportunity to play as the set drummer for a show made up of our local elementary school music teachers, as well as playing in school variety shows, talent shows, concerts, and the CJMEA Honors band – twice! I am the set drummer for my middle school’s jazz band and I double as the set drummer for the high school jazz band as well. I also play with our school’s 7/8th grade band, advanced band, wind ensemble, and marching band! I am our marching band’s section leader. Our middle school just started an indoor percussion group this year, and I am the snare drum section leader for that as well. Every year I look forward to attending our town’s band camp, where I get to play along with our high school’s marching band. I especially look forward to our football season because I am part of the pep band, which is a group of students that have the unique opportunity to play along side the high school marching band at our home football games. I will be graduating from 8th grade this year and I am looking forward to joining our high school marching band this summer!
Some of the drummers that I am awed and inspired by include my drum teacher Colin Bell, John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Carter Beauford, and Neil Peart. I have a love for all music, and some of my favorites are classic rock, reggae, pop, and jazz. I love learning about new drummers in my lessons as I learn about different styles of music!
As much as I am involved with music both in and out of school, I also play for my school’s softball, basketball, and volleyball team. I love riding my bike, hanging with my friends, skiing, snow tubing, swimming, camping, and hiking too.
This is my second year entering this contest. I have always enjoyed Broadway Musicals and wanted to get an idea of what it would be like to be a drummer for a live musical. I wanted to expand my skills into reading charts from famous Broadway Musicals that I love. I’ve recently been concentrating on reading charts, learning drum set notation, and trying to get those page turns down while playing!
For this year’s submission, I have a mash-up for you from Rent (Another Day) and In the Heights (In the Heights). These are two of my favorite musicals, with some pretty groovy beats and a variety of styles. I hope to do them justice just like a pro, and I hope you enjoy what you see!
