Safiya Ellen is a 22-year-old multi-instrumentalist from Orlando, Florida.
Safiya's musical journey began when she started taking drum lessons at age 10 after showing an interest in the instrument. From there, she was quickly captivated by the world of music she had just discovered and began dedicating most of her time to practicing.
However, Safiya's life took a turn at age 13 when she suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as the result of an accident, leaving her with an array of cognitive problems and disabilities. She was suddenly left unable to function normally, and found she could not play drums like she used to or remember songs she used to know how to play. She appeared perfectly normal, but inside she was struggling to process and interact with the world around her.
After weeks of diagnostic tests and therapies, Safiya started trying to reconnect with music. She spent months relearning drums, which involved persevering through some of her newfound impairments such as poor motor coordination skills, memory, and concentration. Miraculously, she recovered her ability to play drums after a few years.
Today at 22 years old, Safiya has played drums in numerous bands and live shows across the country.
In addition to drums, she plays guitar, bass, piano, and sings. She is currently writing her own music and intends to release an EP in the near future. Safiya hopes to use her story through music to inspire and motivate people to never give up and always be kind.
