Hello! My name is Peiying Li. I started playing the drums in China, at age Seven. I attended Shanghai Conservatory and was the first female drummer and percussionist in 2015. After graduating, I then moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where I attended Berklee College Of Music and received my masters degree from the Global Jazz Institute. I was also the first female drummer in that masters program. Currently, I attend New England Conservatory.
Over the years, I have studied under a lot of amazing drummers including Terri Lyne Carrington, Billy Hart, Adam Cruz, lan Froman, LeShawn Harris, Bob Moses and Kim Plainfield.
Recently, I’ve performed at music festivals and toured throughout the United States and China. In 2015, I performed with Grammy Award-winning musician Gary Burton in the John F. Kennedy Center. Most recently, I performed with Grammy Award-winning musician Dave Holland at NEC. Back in China, I was apart of two girl bands. We played all styles of music and was blessed to teach communities in the area.
Music to me has never been about gender. I revel and have always been passionate about drums. Over the few years of knowing about the “Hit Like A Girl” competition, I’ve been inspired to compete this year. Being involved with HLAG is scintillating and makes me happy about life and whats to come.
