FORGOT YOUR DETAILS?

Natalie DePergola

My name is Natalie I’m 18 and have been playing the drums since I was 6 years old. My mom always told me, “It takes a Village”! My village is pretty awesome! The Village leaders, my parents always put instruments under the x-mas tree for us growing up in hopes that me and my brother would want to learn to play something. My brother Scott, went for the guitar. As a 5 ½ year old I worshiped my big brother and wanted to follow everything he did, but I could barely hold a guitar let alone play one back then, so I got very interested in the drums. My uncle Bill kept his kit in my grandmother’s garage so every chance I got I would head for the garage and Uncle Bill (significant member of my Village at the time) would follow me in there to teach me something new. I kept playing til my parents finally bought me my own set of drums. My mom eventually hired her friend’s son Bradley, a drummer, who was playing out a lot. I’ll never forget him, Bradley Whitset Jr, 20 something at the time came every week for a year and every lesson we had he was totally excited to teach me, which made me totally excited to play! Around 10 years old I crossed the line, literally, onto the set of a music- based reality show that was being filmed on location, at some restaurant we were eating at. I basically saw the drum set and just wanted to play so I ducked under the tape and went for it. No one stopped me, so I sat down and played. The next thing I knew the whole band jumped in and started to play with me and a crowd surrounded us. It was the very first time I had ever played with other musicians. We communicated without ever saying a word! I was told we jammed for almost an hour! I was invited back for a taping of one of the episodes and it was the most fun ever. It was at this time My village started to grow, I started hanging out at Seminole Music where I met John Spinelli. John taught me for a while and then handed me off to some incredible teachers. He encouraged me to attend as many drum clinics as possible and signed me up for master classes with just about every clinician that passed through his shop in Seminole. He introduced me to the legendary performer and drum sensation John Blackwell. After one lesson John Blackwell became a permanent member in my village. He has such a huge influence on my playing. JB became my regular teacher when he wasn’t touring, he became my mentor and close friend. RIP John Blackwell, I miss you so much you are a forever member of my Village! There is no plan B for me, drumming is my plan A,B,C and D. For that reason I have continued to pursue as many teachers as possible and to remember the words of my mentor which is to listen and never stop learning. I’ve met some powerful women over the years who have impacted me and encouraged me as well. One in particular, who when she saw me playing in a Go Pro Booth at NAMM, I was only 13 or 14 she told me about HLAG and a brand new magazine she had just started! My eyes became wide open and that ignited a fire for me! I am taking as much advice and instruction from as many talented drummers and musicians as I can to hone my craft. For the love of music and the sake of writing and composing I’ve taken music theory classes and learned to play other instruments. Aside from gigging out with bands locally I now have my own project “Garden Club” with my co-writer and good friend bassist Savvas Savvinidis. We plan to complete our ep within the year. My goals include being picked up to tour by an artist I believe in and to always be the least talented person in the room so I can grow and be challenged. Finally for HLAG I have to say that no matter the outcome for all of the young girls and women submitting video’s and bio’s, this platform gives us all the opportunity to empower ourselves and to be heard in the music industry not just seen. The music industry needs more women, more women up front, and more women in the back! Congratulations to every girl and woman who enters! Thank you so much, hope you enjoy the video! my instagram is @nashshedrums 🙂

When I first heard you play when in the group “Miroux” with my son Joseph I was blown away by your talent. Instanly new you can hang with the best. Watching you help Miroux win back to back battle of the bands was awesome. Keep blazing your path Natalie. The only regrets you have are the risks you never take. You have my vote!!
