I’m from the middle east where women are not encouraged to express in general. Expressing with drumming is very physical in a culture that is extremely masculine and in some places, just playing music is seen as sinful which may lead to lives being threatened.
People in general, even from other countries are either surprised or discouraging of women being metal drummers. Some mentioned to me that it’s very physically demanding and they didn’t think I could do it.
For all these reasons I started our Facebook group “female metal drummers” to show each other and the world that we don't only play the drums, we play metal too, we play as artists and athletes too!
Without forgetting to acknowledge the support of lots of men in the industry.
We don’t want to compete, we just want equality, we want to be seen.
