Hey, I’m Marisa! I started drumming around 15 years old and have been playing for over a decade. Growing up, I played the flute for a few years, then guitar, and one day while at my local music shop for lessons I decided to take “just one” drum lesson to learn the basics; in 45 minutes, I had already learned my first song and was completely hooked!
After playing for a year or so, I attended an all-girls rock camp at the Institute for the Musical Arts and it was the first time I had the opportunity to meet other female musicians and be taught by talented women in the industry. I’m forever grateful for that experience as it left me with so much more confidence, passion, and skill as well as lifelong friends and mentors.
This past year has highlighted how important it is to find what brings you happiness, and for me that’s playing drums. Drumming has helped me through so much in life and has given me an outlet for everything from anger and frustration, to stress and anxiety. It is my release and brings me so much joy and calm. While it’s exciting to practice an instrument to progress and improve, it’s just as important to play for the way it makes you feel. I love watching people light up while playing their instrument and I’m especially inspired and empowered by other female musicians in my life as well as drummers like Anika Nilles, Cindy Blackman, Sheila E., and Kristina Schiano – the world needs more of us!
Thanks for reading & watching,
