Lizzy Schmidt

The drums that I had purchased a dozen years ago to help assuage the pain of my husband's deployments to war in Iraq and Afghanistan had sat silently in the attic for the decade following his safe return home. We went to a music recital and at the end, stopped to say hello to the drum teacher. Much to my surprise, my husband put his arm around me and said "Lizzy is the drummer in our family." I was embarrassed, knowing that I had never taken lessons or acquired skills, but the fuse was lit! Soon I brought each piece down from the attic and set everything up. In November, 2018 I started taking weekly lessons. This is my first entry in the HLAG contest. It is difficult to narrow a list of favorite drummers when I admire all who take on the challenge, but here are a few: Mike D, Sheila E, Eliza Enman McDaniel, Matt Frenette, Giti Khalsa, Eric Kretz, Brian Larson, Penny Larson, Chris Palace, Jim Patric, Bernard Purdie, Questlove and Charlie Watts. A special favorite is drummer Steve Moriarty of The Gits, who has tirelessly kept alive the memory and the legacy of the band's lead singer, Mia Zapata, who was brutally murdered in Seattle at the brink of superstardom. My grandmother was also murdered in Seattle, a painful subject. My thanks to Dale Schmidt, Mark Weatherill and Chris Palace for undying encouragement and technical support. Thank you HLAG for the opportunity. This effort goes out to Grandma Hazel and to Mia, whose opportunities were forever stolen away.

Thank you Queenie, it was seriously like pulling teeth to get the pedal for that song and I almost did not enter at all. Thankfully, my drum teacher encouraged me to enter, and I also took note that this contest is for all ages and all skill levels. Just as a side note, I am also residing in western New York!

I started lessons the year before you and will be submitting my entry soon! Loved seeing your smile while you played – isn’t that what it’s all about!
