Hi, my name is Leilani Torres, and I'm from San Diego, California. I'm 17 years old, and I've been playing drums for almost 10 years. My dad bought my older brother and me a kit when I was around 7. Neither of us really picked it up as a hobby until a couple years later when my brother began practicing more and more. My parents took notice and began showcasing his skills on social media and to family and friends. I didn't like all the attention he was getting, so I decided to get behind the kit and give it a try. That was when I got hooked.
I first started reading music in third grade; however, I had never read and performed any percussion instruments until I joined my middle school's advanced and jazz band. Thats where I learned how to play a variety of concert and latin instruments including: timpani, marimba, congas, etc. The following year I joined my high school's band. Even though I was just a freshman, I had earned a spot on the tenor-line. By my junior year, I was made one of three percussion section leaders and the center tenor. I also performed kit with Cornerstone Percussion, an independent indoor drumline, that same year.
My biggest inspiration growing up was definitely The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold. Now, drummers like Luke Holland, Matt Garstka, and Cobus Potgieter motivate me to expand my chops and technical ability.
When I'm not drumming, I'm either playing guitar or writing songs. But at the end of the day, there's nothing that brings me as much joy as drumming. 🙂
