My name is Katie Ream. I am a fourteen year old drummer, a freshman in Holliston High School, and I enjoy piña coladas and getting caught in the rain. And no, I’m not from the south, I just love saying y’all. I have been a drummer since fourth grade in our school band until sixth grade. Then, I began playing the flute in our concert band and the drums for jazz band until now-and don’t plan on stopping any time soon. On top of playing flute and drums, I also have been doing piano for three years, singing for one year, and I try to write songs whenever I can. For three years, people at school have referred to me as “the drummer girl” because I was the main drummer whenever our school did any concerts, and I have always loved the feeling of being remembered as a drummer to others who didn’t know who I was.
I love exploring all the different genres of music and learning how to perform new styles of music. I prefer playing hip hop and rock grooves on the drums because I am able to play along with so many of my favorite songs, as my favorite music genre is also rock (however I do love playing in big jazz band groups). My favorite drummer is most definitely Neil Peart, one of the reasons I chose to perform ”Spirit of the Radio”. I love to play his signature groove and incorporate it into my own playing and I love the way he orchestrates his fills.
Music has always been one of my big passions because it opens the door to being able to express yourself in ways not possible through writing and talking. I have so much fun when I drum, even if my face doesn’t show it, and I have been so happy to work on this song with my drum teacher Kris Russell who I have been taking lessons from for three years. Through him, I have had the opportunity to meet so many great drummers and do clinics with them, like previous HLAG 18+ winner Lindsay Artkop.
I hope you enjoy this cover of “Spirit of the Radio” as much as I do playing it and remember to ROCK LIFE!
