Katie Ream

Hey guys and gals! My name is Katie Ream, I’m a sophomore at Holliston High School in Massachusetts, and I’m a drummer, singer, and volleyball player. I have been playing drums for over seven years, ever since I chose to play the snare drum over the trumpet in fourth grade (fun story, I cried for the entire day because my parents wouldn’t buy me a trumpet). Since then, I have been a prominent member of multiple jazz bands, many musical pit groups - including school musicals and professional shows - and two music studios: The Drummers’ Studio in Franklin, MA and School of Rock in Natick, MA. In addition, I was a finalist in the Hit Like A Girl 2018 competition and I won the Achievement Award for School of Rock.
My first memory of playing the drums began when I was around seven or eight years old, when my parents had bought my Lego Rock Band for Christmas, which naturally came with its own “drum kit”. I was addicted to playing the drums on all songs, and I soon was playing everything on the expert level mode, which progressed into me having friends over at my house and forcing them to make a band with me. Naturally, I thought I was going to become a superstar drummer and tour the world. Now I want to become an astrophysicist, but that’s a whole different story.
As I mentioned before, I am a member of two music studios. I have been a part of The Drummers’ Studio for five years, taught by owner Kris Russell, who has not only taught me the fundamentals of drumming and helped to solidify my skills as a drummer, but has taught me a respect for music as a whole. He has truly been one of the main people to shape me into the drummer I am today, and I am very excited to someday teach young kids how to play the drums. In addition, I have recently become a part of School of Rock in Natick, which I have been so fortunate to attend because I won the Achievement Award from Hit Like A Girl 2018. At SOR, I have been diving into the world of live band experience and exploring a whole new path of possibilities in the world of music.
Some of my many drum idols are Benny Greb (one of the reasons why I chose to perform his song), Dave Weckl, Lindsay Arktop, Julianna Mascia, and of course Neil Peart. When I was in elementary school, the only drummer who I could really remember was Neil Peart because I was obsessed with Rush, so I would go around and talk about how one day I want to play like my favorite drummer Neil Peart - which I guess I did considering I performed “Spirit of the Radio” last year for HLAG 2018.
The video you are about to watch was originally performed by Benny Greb and the Vic Firth Jam Live band, and the song is called Grebfruit.
I hope you enjoy my video, and I encourage you to check out my music account on instagram @katiereammusic for more of my music!
*Video was recorded at The Drummers’ Studio across multiple takes for variety, but audio is all one take from one source/music is drum-less track*
