I started my journey in music at age 7, when I started taking piano lessons. However, deep down I always wanted to play drums. Before starting piano, I would hit pots and pans with chopsticks; I really wanted to play drums! One day, my grandma bought me my first drum kit. I was about to go into 7th grade and was 12 years old. It was a small first act kit that was kept at my grandma's house and I played it everyday, until it broke. Then, things started to pick up and I joined a drumline elective class at school. I was able to read music and I asked if I could play the tenor drum part. The band director at the middle school instantly recognized me and asked me if I wanted to play in the marching band after school. I instantly took the opportunity and fell in love with the process. He then put a rock band together and asked me to play in the band, and I was the most excited person ever! At that point I was only self taught, but I started taking lessons in eighth grade. Playing drums in a band made me feel invincible. I felt like a whole other side of me came out. I am currently in 11th grade and am 17 years old. I have played in the Monrovia High School Jazz Ensemble for 3 years and have been in the Monrovia Marching Wildcats for 2 years. I am the drummer for 3 bands currently (TemperMental, Athena, and Unicorns at Heart). I am also a member of the Monrovia Young Musician’s Ensemble (MYME) as the percussionist. My main influences are Travis Barker, John Bonham, Matt McGuire, and Dave Grohl, but there are so many others I love too. I love everything music, but drumming has my heart.
