Jennifer Towns

Hey everybody - my name is Jen Towns - I am 46 years old and I live in Upstate NY (near Utica - kinda smack dab in the center of the state!). In between my work as an HR Manager and enjoying life to the fullest with my family and friends, a couple of years ago I decided to take the plunge and learn how to play drums - something I felt I always wanted to give a fair try, but I had always pushed off and let other life stuff get in the way. Little did I know that signing up to take a drum class was one of the best decisions I ever made - now I absolutely love to play, and even though I may have discovered drumming a little bit later in my life, I think that makes me even more excited about it. It's also given me my retirement plan - hope to continue to learn and grow, and maybe someday join a little local band or something and play. There are definitely days when the struggle is real, of course, but there is nothing like the feeling of finally learning something you've worked really hard to figure out - a new beat, a new song, whatever it is...

I am really excited to participate in HLAG contest this year. For my entry, I decided to play along to a drumless track by Seam Armitage - Cool Groove "Creation 1994". It really is a nice little slow groove - I hope you like it - I had a lot of fun learning and playing it. Enjoy! ๐Ÿ™‚

Congratulations. Very excited for you! I also started late, over 50, and yes, it does bring a special excitement to it! I am retired now and can practice everry day! Keeps me busy and my mind sharp. You are doing very well for the amount of time you have been at it.

    • Jennifer Towns on April 27, 2020 at 11:06 am

I totally agree – drumming is so good for the brain and the soul – I’ve got a few years left before retirement, but looking forward to being able to spend more time playing! You sound really great too – thanks for the message!

Hi Jennifer! Congrats on the weekly win. I’m another late-start drummer- mid-fifties for me:) I really enjoyed the play along you chose, and am curious if you had to come up with your own ideas on playing or was there sheet music? Either way, your drumming was very fluid, relaxed, and creative. Our improv jam band does slower jams sometimes, and I enjoy the challenge in that. People sometimes don’t realize the control it takes to keep a slower tempo! You did an awesome job . . . good luck in the contest:)

    • Jennifer Towns on April 27, 2020 at 11:14 am

Hi Lea – better late than never, right??? I composed this -all my own ideas. I had started writing it down, but ultimately I just memorized what I wanted to do within each section. If I was feeling it, I might throw in an extra mini-fill or crash here and there, but most of it was set right from the start. Only having played a couple of years, I still really need to prepare to feel relaxed and fluid – hoping in the future as I play more I will be able to improvise more fluidly, but for now it’s a work in progress!! Agree with you on the slower tempo being a challenge too, especially as the song builds I tend to want to speed up. Thanks for your message – good luck to you as well!!

  28. Richard Vos on May 22, 2020 at 5:44 am

Hi Jen, compliments from a total stranger from another continent. Very well done, and played with great taste! I started playing drums at a “mature” age about 15 years ago and still love every minute of it! So I can relate to your feeling and am also inspired to push it forward by great performances like this. I also have my own home practice room and spend at least an hour every day there to get better. Best thing though is playing live with my band at a gig with an audience, nothing beats that! All the best and don’t forget to relax and smile ๐Ÿ™‚ Cheers, Richard

    • Jennifer Towns on May 23, 2020 at 12:36 pm

Thank you so much for your kind words! Can’t wait for the day I feel ready to play live – someday soon I hope:) This is just the inspiration I need – thank you!!
