Hey, I’m Hannah (aka childcaremichelle). I’m from Southern California and I moved to Brooklyn in September. I’ve been singing and writing songs since I was little and started producing a year ago.
Some of my influences are St. Vincent, Missy Elliot and Björk, but I was listening to a lot of g-funk and Hilary Duff when I made this. I sample a lot of voicemails and interviews in my production, mostly because I feel like they make the music more personal and human. I originally wrote this song on piano, but ended up having my friend Will play the chords on guitar to get more of an early 2000’s sound. I wanted to highlight vocals and keep the rhythm minimal on this track by using only a kick and a snare. I used an arpeggiated harp during the breakdown for a dreamy late-night bike ride feel and slightly distorted the bass, both in Ableton. I wanted vocals to sound as intimate as possible, so I recorded a majority of them directly into my laptop and the rest with an SM58. This is the first song I’ve uploaded to the internet and I’m super excited to be a part of a contest with an organization that does so much to benefit female-identifying producers. Thanks for listening 🙂
