Diane Hirakawa - 2021 Hit Like a Girl - IMPACT theme
My passion for drumming began in middle school as a snare drummer in an all girl drum & bugle corps. I was an only child and being in a group with 100 girls was similar to having siblings. On through college I continued to have an impact on women drummers by being accepted into a previously all male drum and bugle corps in the late 1960's. After a 30+ year break, I started drumming again with a drum instructor who taught me to read drum music notation. This allowed me to edit "Strangiato" to an acceptable contest time.
Learning "Strangiato" was an ambitious project and also playing with a live band. During the guitar solo I kept a single, precise 7/8 beat following Steve Job's "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." My favorite parts were the jazzy tribal part, with my peppy groove on an open hi-hat and double bass, and the formidable drum solos around the kit. Finally, it just felt right to put in a woodblock.
Music influences for this song include:Thomas Lang's double bass work, Steve Gadd's rudiments, and certainly the late Neil Peart's time signature changes and ghost notes.
I hope to continue having an impact on girls by teaching drumming and sight reading. And at age 72, I hope I am a positive role model for female drummers. I will continue my middle school math tutoring to help girls realize they can choose traditionally male dominated professions by having a strong math background.
