Camila Mennitte Pereyra

My name is Camila Mennitte P., I am 26 and I am from Argentina. I have been residing in the United States since 2014 and I am currently based in Chicago, IL. When I was 14 started my journey on the drums listening and playing along to straight ahead jazz. Being from Argentina, I've listened to a lot of music that is popular in my home country. I grew up listening to Argentine (and American) rock music as well as traditional Argentine folkloric music. My musical journey traveling from South America to the Midwest has taken me in different directions and introduced me to different musicians whose sound I love. Some of the performers who inspire me are drummers from the Indianapolis hip hop and jazz scene such as Carrington Clinton, others, musicians with who I’ve had a chance to interact within an educational setting such as Jeff Tain Watts, Geri Allen, and Terri Lyne Carrington. I have always loved the work of these artists not only due to their musical excellence but also because of their involvement with social justice.

In November of 2020 I was granted a Fellowship by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The performance where this excerpt comes from, was curated by the JIC and it took place at Constellation (Chicago). The amazing musicians playing with me in this video are Matt Ulery, Andrew Lawrence, Lenard Simpson and Zachary Finnegan. This short video is from a song that I composed in January of 2021 called Candombe Melodies. Thank you all so much for watching!!!

I have played drums all of my life, but when this young lady is around, I would rather listen to her than play. She is rock solid. Her creative mind never ends and she is passionate about music. To the music community, world wide, Cami is a gift!

Tasteful and brilliant. Truly incredible. When I am lucky enough to be at one of her gigs, I’m always impressed by how many truly gifted musicians’ jaws drop as they listen to Cami play. I love to hear their comments about her incredible talent.

This contest is awesome. Last night our family – and Cami specifically- suffered a tragedy. As performing musicians will understand, this pandemic has been crazy. Cami and her boyfriend, a fellow musician, have been getting by waiting for gigs and performances to open back up. Last night a fire destroyed their meager apartment, their belongings, and their equipment. Cami lost her drum set and her boyfriend his trumpet, along with most of the rest of their belongings. They have each other and their health, and celebrate that. Please celebrate your talent, support one another, and be good to yourselves. It is unclear the “why’s” of this world, but music, empathy, and soul are what will get us all through. Peace.

Excellent touch, smooth with appropriate pop when called for. Great work quarterbacking your fellow artists.
As Buddy Rich said “I’m the bands time keeper” . You are all of that & so much more. Keep following your dream. Good luck
