Camila Mennitte Pereyra
My name is Camila Mennitte P., I am 26 and I am from Argentina. I have been residing in the United States since 2014 and I am currently based in Chicago, IL. When I was 14 started my journey on the drums listening and playing along to straight ahead jazz. Being from Argentina, I've listened to a lot of music that is popular in my home country. I grew up listening to Argentine (and American) rock music as well as traditional Argentine folkloric music. My musical journey traveling from South America to the Midwest has taken me in different directions and introduced me to different musicians whose sound I love. Some of the performers who inspire me are drummers from the Indianapolis hip hop and jazz scene such as Carrington Clinton, others, musicians with who I’ve had a chance to interact within an educational setting such as Jeff Tain Watts, Geri Allen, and Terri Lyne Carrington. I have always loved the work of these artists not only due to their musical excellence but also because of their involvement with social justice.
In November of 2020 I was granted a Fellowship by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The performance where this excerpt comes from, was curated by the JIC and it took place at Constellation (Chicago). The amazing musicians playing with me in this video are Matt Ulery, Andrew Lawrence, Lenard Simpson and Zachary Finnegan. This short video is from a song that I composed in January of 2021 called Candombe Melodies. Thank you all so much for watching!!!
