I’m Brewer (BB) Mitchem, I am fourteen years old, and I’m from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I’m in the ninth grade; I start early collage in the Fall. I’ve been a drummer for over two years, and I have been studying under Pat Gerasia, the drummer for Red Sun Rising. When I first started to get interested in drums, I was in a music class I took at my school, and we were covering drums, and the instrument just appealed to me. I became drawn to it.
Drums, in other words, are my passion. I always enjoy playing and learning everything I can about this instrument. My style of drumming isn’t over-the-top. My style is more filled with grooves and to the point of the beat. I tend to gravitate towards playing beats with my snare, middle tom, and my floor tom, but that doesn’t mean I don’t include a ride cymbal or a crash cymbal throughout the beat! Being a drummer, and making progress with the instrument, is very rewarding to me, also on top of that, being a part of the female drummer community is an honor.
Besides drums and music, I enjoy going to concerts, being with friends, and I model for different upscale boutiques. My plans for my future are to continue playing drums and possibly start my own band. I plan on attending The University of Alabama, majoring in Forensic Science, as well as entering Law School, upon graduation. I love to travel and take new adventures. I always like to discover music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, it’s like a treasure trove filled with music.
My musical influences come from many different genres and many musicians/bands. I can vibe with music that ranges from Elvis all the way to Nirvana. My biggest musical influence is Pat Gerasia; Pat teaches me his drumming techniques as well as pushing me beyond my limits. He is with me on this incredible, musical journey. Pat’s bandmates are big influences of mine as well. Some of my other musical influences include Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Roger Taylor (Duran Duran), Roger Taylor (Queen), Ronnie Tutt (Elvis), Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), & Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters).
I hope you enjoy my entry. Thank you for paving the way for young female drummers.
Peace, rock on, God’s Blessings, and create your own magic!
