AP Tobler

Hello everyone!

I’m AP Tobler from San Jose, CA. I’m 12 years old and have been drumming for 4 years. Music and drumming are my passions and I’m starting to dream about the possibilities. It has been a super busy year and I’ve been having a blast. When I entered last year, I had no idea where my journey would lead. I got to participate in the Hit Like a Girl award show and meet so many fantastic drummers and musicians including under 18 champion Faith Benson. I left so inspired to grow as a drummer.

Eight months ago, I began studying jazz drumming with Wally Schnalle in San Jose. I previously learned music by ear, but am now reading music and emphasizing technique. Jazz is a challenge and I spend a lot of time working on my drum pad and playing rudiments. I spent 2 weeks at jazz camp and even got to play on stage at a jazz club with some of my campmates.

This fall I got to perform with Hit Like a Girl champions Elisa “Helly” Montin and AJ Kostromina at PASIC in Indianapolis. I got to meet so many fantastic professional drummers and attend clinics. I attended my first NAMM Show in Anaheim and go to concerts when I can. I am especially inspired by the drummers from Animals as Leaders and August Burns Red.

I’ve released a number of drum covers this year. It’s fun to work on the piece, put it all together, and share. I’ve also started working with some of my friends on original music. Stay tuned in 2018 😉 I’ve also been working with Electric Giraffe Studio in San Jose to learn more about music production. I shot this year’s video at the studio and worked on the post-production of the track.

I continue to play with the School of Rock San Jose and have been working on technique, reading, and theory with my instructors Travis and Frank. My Hit Like a Girl entry is a mashup of skills from my rock and jazz education. I play classic big band swing, transition to progressive metal, and then blend the two with more of a rock-style ending to a big band song. Hope you all enjoy!

  1. Nice drumming using different styles. I do think it is important to be able to play jazz and most other genres also. And learning drummers from the past as well as today makes you well rounded. Keep growing as a drummer and musician!

    • Thank you so much! When I first started drumming, I actually thought I hated jazz, but then I started taking lessons and listening to it more and I realized how fun it is! I’m working hard on expanding my musical knowledge to different styles and it’s a lot of fun. Thanks for the comment! 😀

  2. I totally agree, the ability to work with syncopations is the most important for any drummer. And if this girl can play such a good jazz at that age, then everything else will be easy. Look at her youtube videos 2 years before and you will see the progress. She is very technical, energetic and charismatic, and even more – she’s ginger! So, its a jackpot :))
    Future American star, without doubt!
