Amelia (“Mia”) Chuss
I'm Mia Chuss. I live near Philadelphia. At age 5 I started to get interested in music. After turning 6 my dad asked me if I wanted to try drums. I instantly loved it! The only problem was that my feet could not reach the pedals! My dad made wooden boxes to put under the pedals to make them taller. When I turned 7 I started taking lessons at The Main Line School of Rock. One of my favorite shows was called Philly Philly. All of the songs in this show were by Philadelphia artists. I was really lucky that one of the show directors was David Uosikkinen the drummer from the band The Hooters. I have learned so much from Dave! He taught me how to swing on Leroy Brown.
After the Philly Philly show, Dave became my drum teacher. I even got to see him play on stage with his band in Philly! The song I am playing in my video is called Every Picture Tells a Story by Rod Stewart. I learned this song for a show. This song was really hard for me at first. But I practiced it a lot until I got good it and now it feels amazing to play!
Even though I love it, it's not always easy to be a girl drummer. Also, I tend to be a little quiet. In the 5th grade I was the only girl drummer in my school band. There were 2 songs in our show that the drummers would play behind a full drum kit. My instructor asked who wanted the parts and the boys pushed their way to the front. I was so bummed! My mom told me I needed to ask for the good stuff. It's not easy for me but I love drums so I learned to stand up for myself.
