Adele Etheridge Woodson
I am a classically-trained violinist, film composer, and producer from Tempe, Arizona, USA. Coming from the classical world, I felt I lacked the agency to be creating the music that I wanted to hear, that I wanted to jam to. I find myself drawn to all types of genres, but for my most recent EP, Sunday in the Park, I really got to dive into the beatmaking world.
Sunday in the Park was commissioned by my hometown's arts council. They asked me to create some sort of music installation at my local park that would bring people outside and encourage them to engage with art in a new and unique manner. I wanted to get my neighbors involved, so I surveyed residents as to what genres they wanted to hear. Based on their responses, this EP has house, minimalist, pop, Portuguese Reggaeton, and an orchestral piece.
This particular track, Never Play to the Gallery, is a hardhitting house piece sampling a 1999 interview with David Bowie. In this interview, he states "never play to the gallery" -- aka all artists should create for THEM, not for the approval of anyone else. Bowie is a huge inspiration of mine, and his words really resonated with me. I crafted this beat on my Akai MPC One in Logic Pro around his words. It was an amazing, freeing experience. I hope that this messages inspires people to continue creating because the world needs their art!
