Hi Im Melissa, tap dancer/creator from Mexico living in NYC. I’m a lover of tap dance, music, art, nature, life…
I recently started producing thanks to one of my favorite artists, Shabaka Hutchings that really inspired me to do it.
Tap dance has introduced me to amazing music, improvisation, cultures and people that have inspired me to see and live life in a beautiful way. Through improvisation I’ve been able to dive deep into myself to search for what I have to say as an artist and human being. It has made me want to always keep learning, evolving and creating.
When I first heard about Ableton in one of Shabaka’s interviews it sounded like something I wanted to explore. I had started to be really interested in composing/creating pieces of music using tap dance as my instrument. At first it seemed far from my reach since I didn’t know any music theory but later Shabaka explained how Ableton worked and that it was (like everything) really just a matter of putting in the work. I started playing with the 30 day trial and watching some videos of Erin Barra on Coursera… I produced my first tune and was hooked.
I’m still just playing around… with the Ableton Live Intro version now though, lol. But I really love the process and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.
Some of my inspirations: Baby Lawrence, Jimmy Slyde, Chuck Green, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Erykah Badu, Shabaka Hutchings, Mos Def, Outkast, Dormeshia, Derick Grant, Jumaane Taylor, Miles Davis and Nubya Garcia.
