Maria Wulf

United States

I am 49 years old and have been passionate about drumming my whole adult life and enjoy the lifelong learning and discipline that goes along with being a musician. As long as I can remember I wanted to play the drums and was lucky in that my parents never discouraged me, instead they supported me and allowed me to follow my passion. I was able to realize my dream of going to the University of North Texas and study with world class musician and educator, Ed Soph. When I was young I couldn’t name more than two women who were professional drummers. I was often given a lot of unwanted attention and well meaning yet derogatory comments like, “You’re good for a girl.” Today I’m so pleased to see so many young girls and women making their mark in the drumming world.

I’ve been understanding more and more how important it is to be present and make yourself seen by those who need to see representation of themselves doing what they dream of doing. Almost every time I am out playing, a woman approaches me and tells me how proud it makes them to see a woman playing drums because when they were young they were told that only boys were allowed to play drums in band. My future goals are to increase my social media presence and inspire anyone who wishes to pursue their passion.

This time last year was the beginning of year two of the pandemic and I was feeling what I call the “COVID Doldrums” when I came across the Hit Like A Girl competition. I decided I needed a project like this to give me focus and and a goal and that I would submit a video for the 2022 competition. I spent this last year deciding on a song that would be fun and a challenge that will help improve my skills. I researched audio equipment, micing techniques, and audio and video production. This has been a wonderful growth experience for me and gave me something positive to look forward to during an emotionally challenging time for so many.

Good tune and vibe by you. Liked the window with double bass. For 8 yrs. we showed my double bass, too, but somehow missed the camera on them this year. Darn! Such is life….. Your tune was intricate and my music friends and I like it a lot. Congrats!

My British drum instructor’s good friend is Rich Redmond (drummer for Jason Aldean) and he, too, went to North Texas. He told me he played for the 1:00 Lab Band at The University of North Texas. Have you heard of it? Great guy! When I was very sick, 8 yrs. ago, he called and we talked 30 min. before surgery. Lucky you to have had the opportunity to go to school there. I attended college in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Rarely a girl on drums, either….

Hi Diana, thank you for comments. Yes, actually Rich and I were in school together. I played in the 2:00 lab band and got to sub in the 1:00 for a week.

Funkiest drumming I’ve heard yet, played very crisply. I live in Frisco, TX, only about 25 miles from \Denton where UNT is located, so I know all about its great jazz program , best in the country. I’ve followed several bands that originated there including Snarky Puppy, Mingo Fishtrap, and the late (and much missed) JR Byrd. I encouraged one finalist from HLAG’s 2015 contest, Elise Trouw, to apply to UNT and put her in touch with the drum ;Professor John Murphy there. She didn’t go, alas. Anyway, I was a regular at the Denton Arts & Jazz fest in April every year and saw some great headliners like Chick Corea as well as all the local talent including the Lab bands from UNT. Glad to hear you got to play in them. Do you ever get back to this area?

    • MariaWulf MariaWulf on April 25, 2022 at 9:03 am

Thank you for the compliments, Sanford, I went to school with the Mingo Fishtrap band members and I love watching their career. I haven’t had the opportunity to visit since I left the area in 2000. I had planned on going to the Jazz Education Conference in Dallas this Spring but was a little too concerned about the virus to go. I would love to go back and visit the campus again sometime.

Hello MariaWulf ( i re write my comment ), i was captivated to read your bio, the path you had to be a passionnate femaledrummer. to represent and to elevate , to give envy to other women to dare & express their passion/love of playing drums ! sure that HLAG provoqued & freeed many of us to show “yes i can do it, i can be me with drums ” ! c’est génial !^^. best vibes to you for the contest !

Maria I loved your groove and I love your cymbal set up!! I noticed you have an eclectic mix of different brands – I’d love to know what you was using- loved the sound –

    • MariaWulf MariaWulf on April 29, 2022 at 1:23 pm

Thanks Michelle. I guess I did use a wide variety on this one. My left side ride is a Bosphorus, main ride is a Zildjian Dark and Dry, my splash and crash are Sabian HHx, and the trash can cymbal is made from Ariel Calabria. My HH is a Meinl. I collect a lot of cymbals to have a varied color pallet in a lot of different settings. I love to talk about cymbals and I’ll send you an email with my thoughts on the different kinds I use and when I like to use them. What do you like to use?
