Heyyyyy, I’m Izi and I’ve been drumming since I was tiny! When I was a toddler, I would play on my dad’s drum kit (no, he’s not a drummer haha!) and when I was two I got my first drum kit of my own! I haven’t stopped playing since! I’ve listened to bands such as The Beatles, Gorillaz, and the Foo Fighters since I was very little, and nowadays my biggest inspirations are prog rock bands such as Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson and Camel, the numetal band Linkin Park, alongside Gorillaz, Blur and a whole multitude of styles ranging from disco, to jazz/afrobeat-fusion, to hip-hop, to heavy metal. If I’m not drumming, I’m in the dance studio, reading Medieval fantasy, or writing my own stories/songs!
I also play the piano, harpsichord, and I sing, both classically and for fun. However, the drums are my primary instrument. Throughout my life, people have seen the fact that I play the drums as a novelty, and haven’t believed how well I can actually play. Many people have underestimated the difference between playing a very basic groove a few times and playing a complex piece with high technical and performing difficulty. I’ve found on multiple occasions that male drummers who were not of as high of a grade/standard as me were given chances to play as the drummer in extracurricular bands or seen as the only proper drummer, while I have been seen as the classical, good girl who is sensible and not very rock ‘n’ roll. When I’ve been given the chance to showcase my drumming skills, people are always so shocked (in a good way!) Luckily, I’ve always had super-supportive drum teachers to help me along my way! Thank you to Rees and Joe for giving me the solidest foundations and technique, and Neil for being an overall legend and helping me to improve my musicianship! Now I’m helping other female drummers-to-be at school in their drumming journeys, and I’m loving passing on my knowledge so that in this community of underrepresented drummers, we can help build each other up!
The first piece I’m playing in this video is ‘Rope’ by the Foo Fighters. This was the first song I did with my tutor Neil, and it’s by one of my all-time favourite bands! Taylor Hawkins is probably my no.1 inspiration and I was so devastated by his loss. This song is awesome – the drums complement the rest of the song so well, and there’s a clear influence from Rush. I really hope that this piece is enjoyable, and that I’ve done Taylor’s insane talent justice!
The second piece I’m playing is the BEST drum piece of ALL TIME – ‘La Villa Strangiato’ by Rush. Not only does this song complement Rope, and not only is it an amazing example of prog rock, but it’s probably my favourite, most fun song to play! I love the feeling of being in sync with the rest of the band, and the array of different drumming styles I get to showcase!
Remember, keep doing what you love and everyone will be able to see your passion and talent! <3
