Emma Sunerton-Burl
United Kingdom
I played the drums for a few years in my 20’s with minimal lessons, but wasn’t able to afford many lessons and didn’t progress, so my enthusiasm faded. At 48 I borrowed a kit to play with my 13 year old on guitar and my husband joined us on bass. I instantly fell in love with drumming again. So I got lessons and have been addicted ever since, now at age 55. I love that the internet gives us such access to inspiration, learning and indeed community. My drumming inspiration comes from Jo Jo Mayer, Michael Schaek and Aric Improto.
Before the pandemic I was in a local avant-garde punk improvisational band and play Cajon in a folk punk band. I like a wide range of music; punk, EDM and rock, particularly where the subject matter is emotional, trauma and difficulty. I choose this song by King Buffalo as I am really taken with the hypnotic groove of it, and the 7/4 time really pushed my skills. It also is talking about emotional turbulence, anxiety and link to suicidality, topics that can be easily swept under the carpet and hidden, but that are important to acknowledge and express, as the track says, it doesn’t just go away in time.
My IMPACT is emotional, I am a psychotherapist and work to help people experience more self acceptance and peacefulness. I believe taking time to explore inner conflict and reactions to past trauma and how they impact present experience, leads to a more full acceptance of ourselves and others; increasing harmony and acceptance for all. Emotional expression and acknowledgment is an important part of this process and music can aid this enormously for player and listener alike.
