Name: Sophia Hanley
Location: New York, United States
My name is Sophia Hanley. I’ve been playing drums for 5 years now. This is my 2nd year entering the Hit Like a Girl contest. I’d like to say thank you to all the people who supported me last year!
I think this contest is very important because not so long ago it was considered wrong for a girl to be a drummer. In fact, when my grandmother was a teenager, she wanted to play the drums, but her father wouldn’t let her. Finally, my great grandmother saved enough money to secretly buy her a kit and they hid it in the attic. They would set it up when my great-grandfather was out! I didn’t know that story when I started drumming, but it made me grateful that girls and women are more accepted in drumming now.
For my entry I made a solo based off Rat Salad by Black Sabbath and then you’ll hear part of Symptom of the Universe also by Black Sabbath. That should give you a pretty good idea of my musical taste and my influences! I admire and am inspired by so many drummers. I’m also inspired by the talented young musicians I get to play with. It’s through music that I’ve met so many great people. Thanks to my teachers at School of Rock Orangeburg and good luck everybody! Follow me on instagram @sophiadrums.
