What’s up fellow drummers and percussionists?!
My name is Jessica Kanani, I am 25 years old and I’ve been playing drums since the age of 8.
Growing up, I had fond memories of my Dad’s band practicing in my basement.
My Dad was the guitarist of the band, and naturally he wanted me to play guitar. But my attempts at learning the guitar was futile; however, my desire for music never wavered. As my Dad’s band was practicing, the drummer, (Nick Magnano) noticed I had a strong interest in his drum set and he let me play. Low and behold, I had found my fulfillment, I had found my rhythm and I ran with it ever since.
Nick Magnano is the drummer that inspired me to pursue my passion, without him I wouldn’t be where I’m at today.
I am a self-taught drummer, but I have had many mentors over the years that taught me the importance of dynamics, and proper technique. Drumming came natural for me and I didn’t have to work too hard to learn something new. Although, timing was something that I had to work hard at. The most difficult challenge for me was learning to use a metronome. The metronome made me want to quit drums! The metronome was like a mirror that I didn’t want to look at. It showed me my flaws in my timing and it was brutally honest. The struggle was real. Eventually I bit the bullet, suffered, and pushed myself to the next level. Now, I can’t live without a metronome. That is what you call building your craft, and I’m still building. I’ve grown so much from learning each piece of the drum set, to learning various sounds of exotic woods, to learning how to tune.
I am thankful for all the people that got behind me all these years and invested time in me. Life has taught me to always keep dreaming, never give up, and beat the heck out of those drums even if you are a girl. It’s time to show the boys what we’re made of!
