Name: Denise Yeow
Good day, earthling. I’m Denise, I’m 20, and I’m from Singapore. Primarily, I’m a drummer whose heart lies within the classic rock/metal genre. I’m not the most technical drummer for sure, but I play with my heart, mind, and soul. And neck. I often get whiplash.
Anyway, I began having an interest in drumming at the age of 9. Nobody, even myself, knows why. I wasn’t even listening to much music then. It’s kinda unbelievable, but it really was as though someone planted the thought of drumming into my head.
When I was 11, I finally voiced out my desires to my parents, who have supported me since the beginning. They never questioned an “unusual” request from a kid, but instead, sent me for drum classes. For that, I’m eternally grateful. I love you, papa and mummy.
About 3 years in, I kinda hit a roadblock. This, however, changed, the day I discovered Guns N’ Roses. Their debut album revived the 14 year old me who was half-dead most of the time. For that, rock music will always have a special place in my heart. It speaks to me, and there’s something captivating about its raw and aggressive energy it gives off.
My drum heroes are mainly: Steven Adler, Nicko McBrain, Josh Eppard, Nick Menza, Jukka Nevalainen and Brandon Khoo (hello Brandon!)
Drumming gives me life; I’ve never felt the same drive for anything else. For 9 years now, it’s become an important part of who I am – my identity. It is heartwarming to see that so many people around the world share the same passion as I do.
Let’s… uh… continue playing with sticks?
