Hi! My name is Claire Krober and I am a sophomore at Avon High School in Avon, Indiana. My parents were in marching band in high school together. My dad was in the drum line and my mom was in the color guard. My sister and I have followed their footsteps-I am in the drum line and my sister is in the guard. I started playing the drums when I was about 5 years old. My dad, being eager in wanting another drummer in the family started me off pretty early. We would play eights and other simple exercises on this really old practice pad and something about it made me fall in love. A couple years later, I wanted to start playing drum set. I remember my dad and I would sneak into our church sanctuary and he would show me some stuff on the electric drum kit (which we now own). Something about it intrigued me from a very young age and I knew that I wanted to be a percussionist. Then, I saw the Blue Devils drum line documentary called “Bluesmoke.” I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I’ve pretty much been a Blue Devils drum line fan since. When my sister started high school, I got to see the Avon drum line a lot more often because she was in the color guard. I just remember thinking that the drum line was so cool and definitely something that I wanted to be a part of. A couple of years later, and I was reaching the latter half of my eighth grade year. This meant that drum line auditions were quickly approaching. I was shooting to make double tenors, a.k.a. “flubs”. I remember I practiced so much every day. To be honest, this was when I started to enjoy practicing. So, the first audition comes, and they put me on snare. I was really nervous because I hadn’t really been practicing traditional grip and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to keep up with THE Avon drum line. Being put on snare at the first audition obviously didn’t mean that I made it, so I went home and practiced my butt off. I didn’t even think I had a shot at making snare my freshman year, especially at Avon, where that is pretty much unheard of. Auditions had wrapped up, and I ended up making snare. Something I had dreamed of ever since I was a little girl had finally come true, and I was really really happy. This year, I was working toward making snare for the World Drum Line, and I ended up making it after a lot of hard work. Now, I’m living the dream, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
