I started drummimg on pots and pans at a young age, but by age 12, my Dad took notice that I could potentially sound good on a real drum kit. From that moment, I learned that it would be one my greatest passions the first moment I hit a drum. I primarily taught myself how to play by ear through watching drum covers on YouTube; however, I had a few lessons in the past at the age of 16. At the same age and also at the age of 17, I had the privilege to play a pair of shows with a cover band covering genres of classic rock and alternative. By 18, I picked up my cell phone to record brief drum videos and post them to Instagram as “drummakitty.” Through utilizing social media for drumming, my passion grew to not only improve as a drummer, but to immerse myself in the drum and music community as a whole. Although my greatest influences have been Luke Holland, J.P. Bouvet, Matt McGuire, Neil Pert, and Scott Travis, I find significant influence in a long list of drummers who post on Instagram because something new can be learned from everyone regardless of one’s reputation. By 20, I posted my first full length drum cover of DJ Snake- Middle (Mija Remix) to YouTube, and I have continued to develop a love to playing to EDM because of the creativity it incites within the realm of percussion. Social media set aside, I have continued to build a foundation and a love for drumming by drumming for a contemporary Christian band, New Life Christian Fellowship, at my college campus (Virginia Tech). I hope to continue to find other opportunities to play with a local band in Virginia Beach, and possibly alongside a DJ to a breadth of EDM genres and artists.
